Confused by home thater mini-systems!!!

Hello,
I'm marring the next month and some of my friend want to make me a gift with a home thater compact system. I've looked at cnet reviews, and also to many sistes with multiregion hacked home thater mini-systems. Pioneer, Sony, Onkyo, all seems great but what is the truth ? Can you guide me to make me a consistent idea not based on brand's name or fashion but only on sound quality and certainly on price? The budget is around 600-1000 € ( 600-1000 us dollars ). Please help me, I'm really confused!!!
