If you own a newer* Mintek/Initial/Shinsonic/US Logic, or other Shinco-built player, there may be a way to make your player region-free from the remote control. (See the bottom of this message for a definition of a "newer" player).

Many thanks to "BearMan", who made the discovery in THIS thread.

If you want to give this a try, here is the procedure:

1. Open the disc tray
2. Push SETUP on the remote control
3. Push 1, 3, 6, and 9, one at a time, on the remote control
4. Push the left menu arrow button 3 times -- NOT the |>| or >> button
6. If you see a new menu item named "VERSION", enter that menu.

(If you don't get the VERSION menu, then your player probably lacks the region menu. You may wish to try the method outlined in THIS message to "force" your player to play DVD's from other regions.)

You should now see a screen that resembles the following:

VERSION: 00.00.05.01
8032: 00.00.05.01
SERVO: 00.00.00.03
RISC: 00.00.05.01
DSP: 01.00.01.02
REGION CODE: 01

Only the REGION CODE option should be selectable; select the 01 and change it to 00 (for region-free operation) or a region number that matches the region code of the DVD disc that you want to play.

7. Push SETUP to exit the menu.

If you decide to try this, regardless of whether or not it worked, please respond to this message with the following info:

a) What is the model number of your player?
b) Did the VERSION menu appear?
c) After doing the following, you should see an extra line of text added to the bottom of your player's setup menu -- what does it say?

Open the disc tray
Push SETUP
Push RETURN
Push 1, 2, and 3, in that order, one at a time.

If you don't see anything added to the bottom of your player's setup menu after performing step c), eject the disc tray, go into PREFERENCES, select DEFAULTS, then RESET, and then try again.

d) Please look at the rear of your player (or perhaps the bottom of the player, if it's a portable model) and post the first 6 digits in the serial number AND the last three characters that follow the hyphen (the last three characters will likely be a mix of numbers and letters). NOTE: Serial numbers from Initial (and other non-Mintek players) may be laid out differently; post as much of the serial number as you wish (there is no need to post the entire number.)

Here's an example of how to respond. This is the info for my player:

a) Mintek DVD-1600
b) No
c) 020522 16:48 HTMI 1
d) 020717xxx-3F2

Here are the results as of Feb. 22, 2003, 9:24 PM EST.

A reminder on how to use this information to decode the firmware date and the date of manufacture (THIS APPLIES ONLY TO MINTEK MODELS)

I will use the Mintek 1600 that Tomato reported on as an example.

"020427" in the firmware version (3rd column) means

02 = 2002
04 = April
27 = 27th

So the date of the firmware on Tomato's Mintek 1600 is April 27, 2002 (or 27 April 2002 if you prefer ).

"020512" in the serial number (4th column) means

02 = 2002
05 = May
12 = 12th

So Tomato's Mintek 1600 was manufactured on May 12, 2002 (or 12 May 2002 if you prefer ).

=====

* The easiest way to tell if you have a "newer" player is by pushing by the Volume Up button on the remote control. If the maximum volume level is 16, then you have an "older" version player; if the maximum volume level is 20, then you have a "newer" version player
