Here is the 04/18/2004 update concerning the "REATTACH BATTERY"
or "UNIT IN SAFEGUARD MODE" problem that seems to be affecting a
lot of us JVC video-camera owners. The problem also goes by error
codes such as "E01", "E03", "E04" and probably others, depending
on the camera model. Many also have had only blank tape to show
after videotaping some event, so I have added that issue to the
complaint. A videocam should know if it is taping or not.

There are so many complaints on the Internet, that I have started
keeping track of them at http://jvc-class-action.blogspot.com/

For those of you who have joined the complaint process, or are
thinking that maybe you should complain, here is what I have so
far:

The problem affects up to 96 videocam models from JVC. There are
326 people with the same complaints, from 17 different countries,
56 of which have given me their contact information and joined
this complaint. In the USA alone, there are owners from 18 states
who have the problem. All information came from public complaints
on the Internet. The details are as follows:

I am not a lawyer, but am in the process of selecting one who
will handle the class-action lawsuit. It seems the size of JVC's
ripoffs affects so many camera models and people, in so many
countries, that instead of wasting time with complaints to
entities like the Better Business Bureau, Federal Trade
Commission, etc., we should just go straight for the class-action
lawsuit. If you disagree, let me know.

If you have not joined this group of angry customers, join us,
and you will not only help yourself and us, but also keep future
customers from being ripped off. This problem has been known to
JVC for years, it affects multiple product lines, and has caused
us countless headaches, frustration and money. We have lost time,
money, and opportunities to tape our family and other things that
are important to us. Opportunities that are gone for good because
the camera would not work. Join us. Individually, JVC will beat
you. Together, we have great power and cannot be ignored any
longer. By the way, if you join there is no obligation or cost to
you.

To join, send your name, address, phone number, camera model, and
any horror stories to juancarrera@yahoo.com

You know, I've got a JVC GR-DVL307U that keeps giving me an error about
having to clean the heads. I'll run the head cleaner through, then 15
minutes later, it tells me to do it again. I know it's a bad idea to use
the head cleaning cassette too often, but have you heard anything about why
this type of thing keeps happening?

Regards,

CJ

run a new tape five or six times instead, it helps with the cleaning,
It solves 30percent of vcr head cleaning and therefore avoiding the
the headcleaning cassette. last resort is actually getting in there
yourself and its sensitive.

I have a JVC GR-DVL505U and the E04 has come up. The solution that has worked for me is squeezing the sides where the tape goes. I did that and so far no problems. But still this should not happen to us, the consumers. Count me in! John.

I am getting this damn message again - tape door will not open or close or release the tape. Cant use camera.
JVC fixed the problem before for $90. and said it was a fuse.

Seeing your note - I don’t think so.

What is status of this?

Model - JVC GR-D90U
Error code 02
Remove battery
Safegard mode
Remove lens cover

Have JVC model GR-SXM320 with error code E04 using a JVC VHS-C tape. Would not eject tape. Took out the 2 screws that hold the outer cover over the cassette compartment. I still could not see what was wrong. Took off the VHS-C cassette's hinged door so I could see the tape. It was a misfed tape. The tape was lying on top of the drum that turns the head. A spring was all bent. I think this spring helps to keep the tape from riding up over the head. But I also saw guides that also try to keep the tape where it belongs, so I removed the bent spring. Then the tape would eject finally. I put in a new JVC tape and I could record, playback and eject without the spring. I still plan on replacing it if I can find the part.

Cheers,
Sue B-T

Continuation, the spring I removed does not have anything to do with tape alignment - maybe static discharge. I run the camera without it successfully.

Hi!

I have a GR DVL 510U and E04 error is also appearing. I'm from the Philippines and got my cam from a surplus store. I got it just before the end of 2006 and it was fine until this month of April 2007. I bought it for my kids so I can capture their precious moments but the SAFEGUARD MODE bug ruined everything. I followed some tips given on other boards and they are not that reliable. They work sometimes and sometimes not. I e-mailed JVC Service Center in my area and they did not bother to reply to my e-mail at all. Maybe its because the cam is out of warranty long time ago. Anyway, I won't buy a JVC again. This is my first camcorder and it sucks. Considering that I am in a third world country and spending thousands of pesos on a crappy cam. It's a bad experience for me.

Add me to the list. I have a GR-DVF21U. I've had E04 error appearing since Jan 2003 when I was in Aruba. I was so frustrated I about through the thing in the sea. The drawer that holds the tape wouldn't close. Now, the camcorder won't show or tape. Very frustrating and makes me realize the risks one takes when going with something other than Sony. I thought I could rely on JVC.
