I'm ready to buy dvd x copy platinum and backup my collection. What kind of
results can I expect with this software.
Ease of use is very important.

I can answer you in one word, "DON'T." I bought it, have tried burning
DVD's, 3 different makes. The files were copied to the hard drive but
the burning all ended in an error messages. Studio321has no toll free
phone support, they do have a chat line on their Website, but you have
to wait for an agent to come on line. That wouldn't be too bad except
that after typing a few words of the question a pop-up message said
the agent "had gone." Where he went I have no idea, but I didn't get
to ask the question let alone getting an answer! I sent an e-mail, got
no response to that either.
I returned the software to the store, Fry's, who had obviously heard
this story before. However, they wouldn't give me a refund on opened
software. They did however say that they would get Studio321 to call
me. To my surprise I did get a call from a very helpful techie. He had
me download Belarc Advisor which he said would enable him to spot any
"known issues." There were none. I then had to download 2 patches,
made no difference.
I asked for a refund, but Studio321 don't give refunds unless you buy
directly from them, not even if the software cannot be made to work.
Luckily there's more than one way to skin a cat, I'd used a credit
card to buy the program, they're going to sort it out.

Before you buy anything from 321 Studios, I strongly suggest you spend some
time reading all the interesting reports in their online forums:
http://dvdxcopy.afterdawn.com/
You'll notice that many purchasers are not exactly happy with the products,
and that support consists mainly of telling purchasers with problems that
it's all the fault of the purchaser's PC, software, etc.
If you do buy, and have any problems, you'll get acquainted with the 321
brand of tech support, which consists of engaging the unfortunate purchaser
in an endless repetition of the same questions and parroting of generic
fixes ("you should format your hard drive and reinstall your OS" is a
classic Or, how about "you'll need to uninstall all other burining software,
it may be conflicting", or "you'll need to install this old ASPI layer to
make DVDXCopy work correctly").
I was looking for what you seek, convenience. Run one program, start the
backup process and walk away. I made the mistake of purchasing DVDXCopy
Express *before* reading up on general satisfaction and problems. Naturally,
I now have a $70 product that won't do what it's advertised to do. The store
won't take it back (I knew that going in). I've played circular questions
with 321 "tech support", resulting in no useful suggestions from them. I was
going to post my questions in their forum, and am now waiting for my
"newbies are not allowed to post for 48 hours" probation to end.
Mind you, not everybody has problems with DVDXCopy. But many do!
I'm writing off the $70 they got from me as a lesson learned. I'll go back
to my DVD Decrypter - Pinnacle Instant Copy 8 combination, which works great
for me.
Bottom line: pay attention to what others here tell you. Get and use the
free/cheap products that are readily available and which *work reliably*.

DVD Decrypter, DVD2ONE and Prassi Primo are the only programs you need.
Pinnacle quality is not that good in my experience.

To put in my two cents worth -- if convenience is worth the money, than
DVDXCopy and XCopy Xpress may be worth while. As you've probably gathered
by reading the other posts, their one advantage is that they offer "one
click convenience." The disadvantage is the cost.
Sor far, DVDXCopy and XCopy Xpress have worked well for me.
If you want to save the money, however, there is nothing magic about the 123
Studios programs. The freeware programs others have listed work just as
well or better, and generally offer greater flexibility, more options, etc.
The only disadvantage of the freeware route, is that they generally require
two steps, using two separate programs. The 123 Studios programs are the
only ones that I know of which will copy an encrypted commercial DVD,
compress it to fit on one disk (if desired) and burn the result to a new
DVD.
If that level of convenience is worth it to you, 123 Studios makes a good
program. If you want to save money, you can get the same or better result
for free with only a little additional work.
Your choice.

Actually, you're wrong about that -- that's what DVDXCopy is for. DVDXCopy
decrypts and backs up commercial, encrypted, copywrited DVDs. This is why
the maker of DVDXCopy has been in litigation with the major studios for over
a year, arguing that doing so is "fair use."
Anyway, I just used DVDXCopy to back up a purchased copy of Terminator III.
That's copywrited and copy protected, no?

In the interest of honesty, I feel compelled to update the story above.
Once I was able to post in the forums, I found some knowledgeable, friendly
people who were able to lead me to some success with DVDXCopy Express.
I never did get any useful help from 321 Studios tech support. As a matter
of fact, the agent with whom I was dealing refused to respond after I
reminded him twice that he was just re-asking the same questions I had
answered previously in the dialog.
In my case, the problem was that while 321 Studios *claims* that Express
will copy and DVD with a single click, that is not universally true. If the
original is too large, Express will *not* intelligently adjust the
compression to ensure a fit on a DVD-R. It aborts with a cryptic "Error
writing disk" message. As 321 Studios supplied no useful documentation, and
the help is general to the point of uselessness, I was led (in the forums)
to the logs produced by Express (not mentioned in any supplied documentation
or help) where the truth was revealed. The answer (which the clairvoyant
purchaser will deduce with no difficulty), is that Express will often abort
this way if the user selects "Copy entire disk" from the interface. Again,
the help offers no explanation or possible results from such a choice.
So, I now have been able to back up some DVD's (movie only), but without the
extra material on the original.
So, IME, if you choose to buy a DVDXCopy product, realize that the product
may not do what is promised on the box, their tech support is useless and
that the forums will be your only hope if problems arise.
